Armenia Annulled The Zurich Protocols

Yerevan. March 1, 2018
Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan cancelled the already inactive and non-ratified Armenia – Turkey protocols initialy signed to normalize bilateral and diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey.
During his address to National Security Council of Armenia, the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan expressed his disappointment towards what he called the continuously lack of willingness and progress from the Turkish side toward implementation.
The Turkish has in time, repeatedly outlined absurd preconditions for their ratification, contradicting the basis of the protocols. The signing agreement in Switzerland at the time, was supported by Russia, the United States and France.
Noteworthy to say that the Armenia – Turkey Zurich protocols were signed much to the discontent and disapproval of the Armenian Diaspora, on in 2009 and were intended to initiate the cross border normalization and buildup of bilateral diplomatic relations, pending ratification by both countries’ parliaments.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Edward Nalbandian also addressed the National Security Council of Armenia during the said meeting, explaining that the Armenian side “fully realized the possible further developments” that Turkey show the necessary political will towards its commitments. “Time proved that our concern was righteous. Up to this day, the absence of any step towards the ratification of the Protocols from the Turkish side, continuous attempts to link the ratification of the protocols with preconditions, provocative statements against Armenia and Armenians voiced by Ankara vividly attest that Turkey is not ready to ratify and implement the Protocols,” the minister concluded.
For the Armenian Diaspora, the general sentiment has always been that the entire progression of events were ambiguous and contradictory since the beginning and obviously with very questionable agendas, it was particularly biased, with offensive and objectionable conditions which did the least to encourage and engage the sentiment s of the Armenian diaspora.
